Cables are easy to fathom. Just bobble along
with our picture-perfect guide and you’ll
find smooth sailing.
1)
FOUR-STITCH RIGHT CABLE
A right cable slants the stitches to the
right. To begin this cable, slip the next
two knit stitches on the left needle purlwise
to a cable needle and hold them to the back
of the work, as shown.
2)
FOUR-STITCH RIGHT PURL CABLE
The only difference between this cable and
the previous one is that two purl stitches
are slipped and held to the back.
3)
THREE-STITCH LEFT PURL CABLE
Here we show how to begin the three stitch
left purl cable: Slip the next two stitches
to the cable needle and hold them to the
front of the work, then purl the next stitch,
as shown.
4)
THREE-STITCH RIGHT PURL CABLE
To complete the three-stitch right purl
cable, slide the stitch that is on the cable
needle to the tip and purl it from the needle.
5)
FOUR-STITCH LEFT PURL CABLE
If you prefer, instead of working the stitches
directly from the cable needle, you can
slip them back to the left needle, as shown,
working on a four-stitch left purl cable.
6)
THREE-STITCH LEFT CABLE
This simple cable crosses one knit stitch
to the left over two knit stitches and is
used in the cabled hat on page 49. Slip
the next stitch on left needle to a cable
needle and hold it to the front, then knit
the next two stitches on the left needle,
as shown.
7A)
BOBBLE-ICIOUS
To create the popcorn effect in this cable
pattern, extra stitches are worked into
one stitch on the wrong-side row as follows:
Knit into the front and back of the stitch
twice, then into the front once more to
make five stitches. Work back and forth
in reverse-stockinette stitch on these newly
made stitches for four rows, ending with
a right side row.
7B)
Now you must eliminate the
additional stitches on the last wrong-side
row as follows: Insert the left needle into
the second stitch on the right needle and
pass it over the first stitch; repeat until
all bobble stitches have been bound off
and one stitch remains.
