1. To make the first half of the pleat, slip the next two sets of eight stitches to their own separate double- pointed needle (dpn) and hold them to the left of the work as shown.. 2. Fold the second dpn to the back so that the purl stitches of the dpn face the purl stitches on the left-hand (LH) needle; fold the first dpn behind the second so that the knit stitches on both dpns face each other, as shown.
3. Now, knit all the stitches from the two dpns and LH needle together as follows: Insert the right hand (RH) needle into the front of the first stitch on LH needle and the first stitch on each of the two dpns, as shown. Wrap the yarn around the RH needle and knit these three stitches together. Repeat until all eight stitches have been worked onto the RH needle. 4. To complete the second half of the pleat, slip the next eight stitches from the LH needle to the RH needle, slip the next eight stitches to a dpn, then slip another eight stitches to a second dpn and keep them at the back of the work, as shown.
5. Now return the first eight stitches from the RH needle back to the LH needle (being sure not to twist them). Fold the stitches from the first dpn to the back so that the purl stitches face each other, then fold the stitches from the second dpn behind the first one so that the knit stitches face each other, as shown. 6. Knit all the stitches from the two dpns and LH needle together as in step 3. One 16-stitch pleat is now completed.
