Cephalopod Party
I leave the office for five minutes, and come back to this precariously stacked tower of precious on the edge of my cubicle.
I should have known better than to leave these things unattended around the hooligans of the knitting department, but fortunately, there were no major accidents. Unfortunately, all of the Octopi (or Hexopi, if you want to be mathematically correct) have since been gifted away to various friends and family members celebrating birthdays, but their memory lives on, here in this blog, with a free pattern! Ta da!
Heptopod Amigurumi
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn, size H-8 hook, poly-fil stuffing, plastic safety eyes, scrap of contrasting yarn for row marker.
Directions are for small (medium, large).
Increase by sc twice into one sc.
Head:
Rnd 1: Ch 2, sc 6 into 1st chain- do not join with a slip stitch but instead, place marker; the rounds will be worked as a spiral.
Rnd 2: Inc into each sc [12 sts]
Rnd 3: (Inc, sc) repeat around [18 sc]
Rnd 4: (Inc, 2 sc) repeat around [24]
Rnd 5: (Inc, 3 sc) re[eat around [30]
Continue increasing in this manner until there are 60(88,106) sts.
Sc around until piece measures 8″(10″, 12″) from last increase row.
Work 1 rnd sc through the back loops- this creates an artificial seam to make it sit flatter. The following decrease section closes off the bottom.
(sc 14(11,8)dec) repeat around
(sc 13(10,7)dec) repeat around
(sc 12(9,6)dec) repeat around
Continue decreasing until 36 sts remain (all sizes). Stuff firmly with poly-fil. Attach eyes 5(8,13) rounds up from seam and about 5(8,10) sts apart. Continue decreasing until 6 sts remain, sew shut.
Legs:
Rnd 1: As with head, ch 2, sc 6 into 1st chain- do not join with a slip stitch but instead, place marker; the rounds will be worked as a spiral.
Rnd 2: Inc into each sc [12 sts]
Rnd 3 : For small, inc 2 in row, sc around until leg measures 3″
Rnd 3: For medium and large, (inc, sc) repeat around [18 sc]
Rnd 4: For medium, inc 2 in row, sc around until leg measures 5″
Rnd 4: For large, (inc, 2sc) repeat around [24]
Rnd 5: (Inc, 3 sc) repeat around [30], sc around until leg measures 6.5″
Leave 10″ tail on each of legs to use for seaming. Make 6 legs, stuff firmly, sew to seam.
If you want a smaller, faster (and even cuter, if you can imagine) version, stay tuned for the Winter K1 issue, which appears on news stands December 4th!
Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions, and we’d love to see a snapshot if you make one.

We even found a bunch more patterns (knit and crochet) so that there’s variety.
I have 4 more legs to make and I’ll be posting my FO.
Thanks for the pattern!

They turned out to be much bigger than the picture led me to believe! But still very very cute. I gave mine eight legs though - I couldn’t just give him six. I also made him a set of bagpipes, for a friend who plays bagpipes and likes octopuses/octopi.

I was so forlorn because my office had no octopi, but my crafting-buddy came to the rescue and now I have one that sits on top of the xerox machine (when I am not carrying him around like an obsessed four year old). If anyone wants to see, I have pictures up on my new blog in progress:
